ALL UPDATED INCIDENT INFORMATION IN BLUE:

STATUS OF TUSTIN UNIFIED SCHOOLS:

The detection and mitigation crews have not only been busy in residential areas; they have also been working to clear Tustin Unified School District (TUSD) campuses as well. The IMT is working in close collaboration with the TUSD, South Coast Air Quality Management District (AQMD), OC Healthcare Agency (OCHCA) and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to ensure the safety of the community and children to reopen all schools to in-person attendance. To date, 27 of the 29 school campuses have been inspected and cleared to reopen for students with the exceptions of, Legacy Magnet Academy and Heritage Elementary School. Staff and student safety requires not only clearing both campuses, but also securing the area surrounding the hangar prior to releasing these campuses back to normal operation.

RESIDENTIAL UNVERIFIED DEBRIS INVESTIGATION AND MITIGATION:

Crews continue to expand into the immediate areas surrounding the hangar to investigate and mitigate unverified reports of debris related to the hangar fire. While the residential clearing of exterior (front & back yards) continues, other crews are remediating the schools, parks, and open fields. Some of these workers are literally crawling on their hands and knees, shoulder to shoulder, clearing every square foot of these areas. It’s a labor-intensive process, but progress is being made. More Certified Asbestos Consultant (CAC) crews are arriving to reinforce the six hundred workers already present. The focus of these inspections will begin at the neighborhoods closest to the fire. Please report any suspected debris using our debris reporting portal on our webpage at www.Tustinca.org or call 714-426-2444. Crews will leave a flyer at your door with information and a QR code to make a future appointment if they come through your neighborhood and you are not home.

THE SAMPLING & REMEDIATION PROCESS:  If you have used the debris portal to report possible hazardous debris items, this is a step-by-step process for how our teams will respond:

  1. Your report will be assigned to a Certified Asbestos Consultant (CAC) who will contact you to set up a time to visit your home or business.
  2. *The CAC or Certified Site Surveillance Technician (CSST) will visit your home to collect a sample of the debris and send it off-site for testing. You will be contacted to confirm whether the debris is Asbestos Containing Material (ACM).
  3. *If the debris tests positive for asbestos, an ACM remediation team will be assigned to return to your home to clean-up the debris. Upon completion of the clean-up, a third team will return to your home or business to confirm a successful remediation of the area.
  4. You will be asked by the crew to sign a release of liability that only provides consent for the crews to access your private property to investigate and remediate any suspected material.
    • Please refer to the “Private Property Consent and Waiver Process” document located on the Tustin Hangar homepage in the Daily Information Update section.

*PLEASE NOTE THAT STEPS 2 AND 3 MAY BE DONE SIMULTANEOUSLY
